Samsung Joins the Olympic Promo Pack

Samsung Mobile is catching a ride on the Olympics wave with an online scavenger hunt for gold medals that has a $100,000 grand prize at the finish line.

“Medal Mania” launched yesterday and will run up to the closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on Aug. 24. The promotion encourages registered contestants to amass as many virtual gold medals as they can in that time. It gives them three ways to do so: by “finding” them on sites scattered around the Internet; by encouraging others to join in the hunt; and, once the games begin, by receiving a gold medal for every event in which an American athlete or team takes the first prize.

Contestants have a chance to uncover two Internet medals a day, one from clues on MedalMania.com and the other in clues sent daily to their e-mail addresses or via SMS to their mobile phones.

Each medal counts as an entry in the $100,000 grand prize sweepstakes, so players are motivated to pick up as much gold as they can through the Web hunt and by referring up to 10 friends.

For every 10 medals collected, players will also receive one entry into an instant-win game that offers 200,000 prizes ranging from flat panel TVs and home theater equipment to Bluetooth headsets and ringtones.

“Medal Mania” players can show off their gold medal count by posting a widget to their Facebook profiles.
