Nintendo, Southwest Reward Fliers with Free Game Systems

Southwest Airlines has found a new way to reward frequent fliers—video games.

The airline has teamed up with Nintendo to give some of its Rapid Rewards members a free Nintendo DS Lite game system and a copy of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day. The goal? To thank its top Rapid Rewards loyalty members.

It’s the first time Southwest has partnered with an outside company to offer a premium for its loyalty program members.

“We are helping our members welcome the New Year with low fares, frequent flights and, of course, exercise—exercise for their mind while they travel,” said Blair McGrain, director of marketing planning and customer loyalty, in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo to give our members some fun.”

Already, Southwest has sent out the Nintendo DS gaming system and video game to its top 50 members. Recipients were selected based on their length of membership and accumulated miles, the airline said.

In all, Southwest’s top members have flown more than 79.2 million miles and have more than 600 years of membership.

“Providing some of Southwest’s premiere travelers with these gifts helps us reach out to new audiences and shows that we make fun games for everyone,” said George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, in a statement.
