New USPS 13-Ounce Package Rule to Take Effect

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

The U.S. Postal Service is tightening rules for the mailing of certain types of packages. This rule change could possibly affect some types of direct mail fulfillment.

Beginning Mon. July 30, the USPS is requiring that packages using stamps as postage that weigh more than 13 ounces be mailed at a post office retail counter. Such packages can no longer be deposited into USPS mail collection boxes, post office lobby mail slots or be left for pickup by letter carriers.

Instead of stamps, mailers can use online postage applications such as click-n-ship service on the usps.com Web site or PC Postage from an authorized USPS vendor.

This rule does not apply to business mailers who use postage meters.

Previously, this prohibition applied to mail over 16 ounces. The change is part of ongoing security measures established by the postal service, in cooperation with other government agencies, according to the USPS.
