MySpace Still King of the Social Networking Hill

According to recent figures from comScore, MySpace retained its spot atop the list of online social networks in February, though its year-over-year growth was dwarfed by Facebook’s.

MySpace boasted 70.3 million unique visitors in February, reflecting 3 percent growth from its 68.0 million visitors in the same month last year.

Facebook was second on the list with 57.4 million unique visitors in February, which shows growth of 77 percent from 32.4 million visitors in February 2008.

Classmates Online was third with 16.2 million visitors, a 24 percent boost from 13.1 million in the same month in 2008, while MyLife.com was fourth with 15.3 million visitors. (Growth and February 2008 figures for MyLife.com were unavailable.)

Buzznet ranked fifth 8.7 million unique visitors in February, a 66 percent jump from 5.2 million visitors in February of last year.

Yahoo! Buzz was sixth with 8.0 million visitors in February, a 169 percent increase from 3.0 million in the same month last year, while AOL Community was seventh with 7.3 million visitors, reflecting a 9,513 percent surge from just 76,000 visitors in February 2008.

LinkedIn was eighth with 6.9 million visitors in February, a 110 percent increase from 3.3 million in the same period last year, while AIM profiles was ninth with 6.9 million visitors, a 13 percent decline from 8.0 million in February of last year.

Digg rounded out the top 10 with 6.9 million visitors, a 25 percent increase from 5.5 million visitors in February 2008.

Bebo was 11th with 5.8 million visitors, Tagged was 12th with 5.4 million visitors and DeviantART was 13th with 4.8 million visitors.

Twitter was in 14th place on the list with 4.0 million unique visitors in February, a 1,085 percent boost from 340,000 visitors in February of last year. This number is sure to be significantly larger today, especially in light of all the celebrity attention it has garnered in recent weeks.

According to comScore, the total Internet audience grew 4 percent to 192.2 million unique visitors in February from 185.0 million in the same month in the previous year.

The social networking audience was pegged at 122.3 million unique visitors by comScore.

comScore also noted that Facebook is the top ranked social network in the majority of European countries. Facebook attracted 99.8 million unique visitors in Europe in February, reflecting a 314 percent increase from 24.1 million in February 2008.

The site saw significant growth in Italy (2,721 percent) and Spain (999 percent).
