Michelle Kwan Skates Away with Disney Deal

Figure skater Michelle Kwan signed a deal with The Walt Disney Co. to act as a celebrity spokesperson, the company said last week.

Under the multi-year agreement, Kwan will be featured in Disney ads and media promotions and will make guest appearances at live Disney events. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Kwan is no stranger to Disney. Disney Publishing Worldwide published Kwan’s fictional book series Michelle Kwan Presents Skating Dreams. Kwan has also appeared in ABC and Disney TV specials, including a primetime special based on Disney’s animated movie Mulan.

“Michelle is a true champion,” said Matt Ryan, senior VP, Brand Management, The Walt Disney Co. in a statement. “While her magnificent artistry on the ice has been applauded the world over, she also sets the standard for grace and dignity, which truly accounts for her universal appeal. We at Disney are honored to be associated with Michelle and know that her unique style and commitment to quality will be enjoyed and appreciated by our audiences everywhere.”

Kwan, a two-time Olympic medalist, withdrew from the 2006 Winter Games last week because of a groin injury. Her absence raised questions about future sponsorship deals. Already, Coca-Cola has stopped airing an ad that features men in warm-up suits rooting for Kwan while watching TV, news reports said. Kwan, who earns about $1 million a year from endorsements, has deals with Coca-Cola, Visa and AT&T, according to news reports.

Yet other sponsors, including Visa, plan to continue Kwan ads. “She embodies the Olympic spirit, even off the ice,” said Susanne Lyons, Visa USA marketing chief, USA Today reported.
