McDonald’s Accents McCafe Launch with Gift-Card Giveaways

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Quick service superpower McDonald’s is counting on espresso-based coffee drinks in its fight to win the caffeine wars in the morning daypart. It’s also counting on gift-card giveaways as a tactic to get users into the stores to try those new drink items.

The chain is running a “McCafe Your Day” contest that will offer each of two grand-prize winners a $50,000 Visa gift card and a $500 McDonald’s Arch card. Entrants can go to a microsite to upload a story and photo detailing why they, or someone they know, would have their day made by being McCafe’d. A judging panel will choose five finalists from the entries received by June 21, basing their selection on the creativity, originality, appropriateness, expressiveness and photo appeal of the submissions. All the finalists will receive a $1,000 visa card and a $50 McDonald’s Arch card.

An online vote at the Web site between July 13 and July 26 will name the two grand-prize winners from among the five finalists. Those winners will be named some time after Aug. 3 and receive their additional Visa and McDonald’s gift cards.

In addition, visitors to the Web site can take part in a weekly “McCafe Your Day” random drawing by entering their name, phone number, mailing address and date of birth. Each week for 13 weeks, from May 5 through Aug. 4, McDonald’s will draw 10 names from the pool of submissions and award those winners each a $1,000 Visa gift card and a 450 McDonald’s Arch card.

The line of McDonald’s McCafe beverages includes espresso-based products such as cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, as well as hot and iced brewed coffees and hot chocolate. Customers can get these customized with syrups flavored in caramel, hazelnut vanilla and sugar-free vanilla, and can top them with chocolate, frothed milk and whipped cream.

“The launch of McCafe is a great reason for us to celebrate, and we want to give our customers something extra special to celebrate with us,” McDonald’s USA marketing director Sofia Therios said in a release. “Through the ‘McCafe Your Day’ contest and sweepstakes from McDonald’s and Visa, we’re giving our customers the opportunity to take home an extraordinary grand prize that may make their day, or the day of someone they know ,just a little bit better.”

The specialty coffees come in small (12-oz.), medium (16-oz.) and large (22-oz.) sizes, while the iced coffees are available in medium and large portions.
