LivingSocial Hires Best Buy’s Former CMO, While Groupon Announces Its Q4/FY 2012 Earnings Call

LivingSocialLivingSocial has hired Barry Judge to be its new chief marketing officer (CMO). Judge resigned from his global CMO post at Best Buy back in May after starting there in 1999.

“Barry helped one of the world’s largest retailers build a powerhouse online and mobile presence, and we’re confident he can help us extend our own leadership in the local commerce space,” said Tim O’Shaughnessy, CEO of LivingSocial, in a press release. “With his experience and strategic insight, Barry will help us reach millions of new consumers and businesses around the world.”

The release also notes that “Judge will oversee all aspects of marketing for the company, including online and offline advertising, brand management, social media, and communications.”

“My career has been spent inventing and reinventing great brands, and LivingSocial has a unique opportunity to build a new industry from scratch by helping millions of local customers discover and share the best things to do in their cities,” Judge said in the press release.

As LivingSocial made headlines with this move, it seems that its chief rival Groupon has been quiet since its acquisition of CommerceInterface before Christmas. Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped others from talking about Groupon: For instance, readers of Silicon Valley Business Journal voted on which tech company will die in 2013, and 37.1 percent answered Groupon, just behind the 37.7 percent who answered Zynga.

It seems we’ll get our first hint at how Groupon will fare this year on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 5 p.m. EST, which is when the daily-deals company will hold a conference call to discuss its fourth-quarter and full-year 2012 financial results.
