[Re: Loose Cannon: A “Palindromic” Marketing Campaign Gets it Backward, Direct Newsline, June 9, 2003]

I wonder how many of these we have witnessed? Hundreds maybe. Some really great, quirky promotions evaporating from inattention. What a great list that would make. The “Hall of Fame of Most Remarkable Evaporating Promotions.”

I’d like to add one. A computer POS service supplier, in an effort to gain notice, began faxing a serialized wacky story about a Taco Bell shift supervisor, her boss-becoming-boyfriend, and computer system failures due to her daydreaming.

The restaurant service company faxed one every other week. Soon they began receiving calls asking when the next installment would be sent. Two installments later it simply ended. The visionary author left the company. Just that fast the company reverted to “same as” competitor status that he sought to change. Gone. Evaporated. No one ever found out if her drive-thru would ever work again and what goes on when she takes off to Hawaii with the boyfriend-boss just before the city’s softball tournament begins.

Esoteric one example and wacky the other. What are some more? Great sidebars to our business.
