Kentucky Cracks Down ON TELEMARKETERS

Kentucky Attorney General Ben Chandler has sued four telemarketers for $200,000, citing alleged violations of the state’s do-not-call law.

Eighteen other telemarketing firms from 12 states also will pay Kentucky $5,000 to $20,000 each in civil penalties to remove similar charges.

In August, Chandler filed actions against Minnesota-based Alpine Glass, an auto glass replacement firm, and Consolidated Credit Services, a New York debt consolidation firm. Earlier, he moved against Simplified Data Solutions, three individuals associated with that Largo, FL outfit, and Sound Media Group of Irvine, CA.

According to Chandler’s office, employees of all four companies made 100 telemarketing calls to Kentucky residents who placed their names on the do-not-call list since it went into effect July 15. By early August, there were more than 675,000 names on the do-not-call list.

Chandler is seeking the maximum civil penalty of $5,000 per call from each of the defendants named in the lawsuit. None could be reached for comment.
