Jelly Belly Names Recipe Contest Winner

Jelly Belly has named a computer expert as the top winner in its Recipe Game
contest.

Eric Warren, of Evanston, IL, took home the $10,000 grand prize. His winning creation: Cherry Turnover. That includes a combination of Very Cherry, Buttered Popcorn and Caramel Apple jelly beans.

It took Warren about 10 minutes to come up with the recipe. He told Jelly Belly he was inspired by his host daughter, who is training for the Olympics. Her favorite comfort food is cherry turnovers.

“When I can’t make a hot cherry turnover, a few Jelly Belly beans together give her the comfort of home in her pocket,” Warren wrote in his entry.

The winning recipe was one of about 45,000 that Jelly Belly received for the contest, which ran on 6 million packages of the candy, (Promo March 2007).

“We looked at all of the recipes and narrowed them down to the most appealing,” Tomi Holt, a Jelly Belly spokesperson said.

Voters picked the winner from eight finalists’ recipes in an online vote. Other submissions included Caramel Pear Torte, Peach Belini, Rainbow Sherbet, Raspberry Mocha, Blueberry Pancakes, Pomegranate Cosmopolitan and Banana Bread.

Visitors to Jelly Belly’s distribution and tourist centers in Fairfield, CA, and Pleasant Prairie, WI, can sample the finalists’ creations, Holt said.
