FLINT, MI – Never mind angels on the head of a pin. How many basketballs can you jam into a new 1998 Supercharged Buick Regal GS? That’s the big question that’s being asked of customers by Sears and Buick Regal, major sponsors of the WNBA, in its national sweepstakes promotion this summer.
At the beginning of the league’s second season, more than 830 Sears stores nationwide will ask consumers to guess the basketball capacity of the Regal GS, all brimming with basketballs and located near select Sears stores in each of the 10 WNBA cities.
Entrants who answer correctly will be entered into a random drawing for the chance to win one of the 10 supercharged Buicks, the official car of the WNBA.
One grand prize winner will have a brand new Regal Gs delivered to her or his home by the WNBA’s 1997 MVP Cynthia Cooper of the Houston Comets.
At the end of the national sweepstakes, thousands of WNBA basketballs will be “unjammed” from the Regals and donated to local children’s charities.
Sears and Buick Regal will support the promotion with a TV spot featuring Cynthia Cooper. A Sunday Sears newspaper insert reaching 50 million households will invite customers to visit their local Sears store to enter. Also, players in each WNBA market will visit Sears stores to raise awareness of the promotion and sign autographs.
“Sears is proud to partner with Buick on this fun and innovative promotion,” says Sears senior executive vp of marketing, John Costello. “Promotions like this enhance our multi-faceted WNBA sponsorship, which is the cornerstone of Sears commitment to women’s athletics.”
Sears will also host a variety of Catch the Ball with Sears and the WBNA activities specifically designed to capture excitement in each WNBA market.
More than 400 Sears stores across the country will carry officially licensed WNBA products including team T-shirts, shorts, jerseys, and official WNBA basketballs.
Buick Regal will also have an on-court contest at select WNBA games featuring supercharged families.
