Italy Sees Dramatic Decline in Internet Users

Nielsen Online recently released its monthly count of active Internet users around the globe for October. The U.S. continued to lead the list of the top 10 countries, while Italy saw a large month-to-month drop in its Internet user population.

The U.S. had 150.4 million Internet users in October 2008, which reflected a small decline of 0.12 percent from its 150.6 million users in September.

Japan was second on the list of 10 countries that Nielsen Online tracks each month with 48.5 million users, a 0.98 percent decrease from its Internet user population in the previous month.

Germany was third with 38.5 million Internet users, a 2.73 percent increase from its September count.

The U.K. was fourth with 28.2 million users, followed by France with 28.0 million users and Brazil with 23.7 million users.

Italy was seventh with 17.2 million Internet users in October, reflecting a sharp 19.62 percent decline from its September population of 21.4 million users.

Spain (17.0 million), Australia (11.3 million) and Switzerland (3.7 million) rounded out the list of 10 countries.
