In the Midst of Massive Layoffs, Some Still Hiring

Posted on

The tech industry has not been immune from the massive number of layoffs during the past year. Palm, Dell, Six Apart, Akamai and LinkedIn are just a few of the employers who have made significant cuts to their payroll.

Still, some of the big players in the industry are reportedly still hiring.

Facebook, for one, plans on increase its workforce by about 25 percent before 2010. This bit of encouraging news comes courtesy of Silicon Alley Insider Senior Editor Dan Frommer’s recent conversation with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg said while Facebook had approximately 800 employees at the end of 2008, the company planned to boost this number to 1,000 before 2010 comes around.

Another report from Xconomy suggests that Microsoft and Amazon “seem to be really hiring in full swing.”

Google and Yahoo!, on the other hand, may not be as open to expanding their respective staffs during this time.

Money has dried up for small start-ups that hoped to jump into the game in 2008, and there is little reason to think this will change much at all during the first half of 2009.

Most recently, Seagate announced plans to lay off 800 workers, or about 10 percent of its total workforce.
