Illinois is the Most Spammed State

A recent report released by MessageLabs Intelligence lists the top 10 most spammed states in the U.S. The top 10 list is:

1. Illinois
2. South Dakota
3. Oregon
4. New Hampshire
5. Wisconsin
6. North Carolina
7. Indiana
8. Texas
9. Pennsylvania
10. Alabama

The reason for these states ranking in the top 10 probably has to do with socioeconomic and attitude differences. “The states that are experiencing higher spam levels may not place as high a priority on IT security overall or employees and businesses may be more willing to share their personal contact information in public domains,” said Matt Sergeant, who is the Senior Anti-Spam Technologist at MessageLabs. “When email addresses are openly available, spammers take advantage of it and inundate those inboxes with massive amounts of spam.”

On a broader scope, 81.5% of spam was from new and previously unknown sources. The average spam ratio for the U.S. as a whole was 86% in June, with 78.5% as the lowest ratio for a single state, or in this case, territory (Puerto Rico).

Illinois’ spam ratio was 92.1%.

As always, spammers seem to be using more nuanced approaches to their profession, getting more targeted and taking advantage of current events and trends.
