Really. It’s the tooth. Ouch. If you’re a kid, getting a tooth knocked out today doesn’t pay as much as it did last year, according to Securian Dental’s 2007 Tooth Fairy Poll. The average “gift” children received was $1.71 per tooth in 2007, compared to $2 in 2006 –a 14.5% decrease. “The downswing is inconsistent with trends exhibited in other more commonplace indices,” said Marty Weiland, operations analyst for Securian Dental. “The NASDAQ and Down Jones Industrial Average indices have increased 7.6% and 3.5% over this same time period, respectively. It is worth noting that we didn’t see as many “over-the-top” gifts this year; a gift of $10 or more was not as prevalent.” According to the poll, Tooth Fairy gift amounts ranged from a low of 25 cents to a high of $25 per tooth. Parents of today’s kids reported that they received an average of 49 cents per tooth as children. The poll went to a portion of the commercially insured population.

Getting buzzed about books. Scholastic and Target are kicking off a four-month summer reading program May 15 with a dedicated Web site. To participate in Scholastic Summer Reading Buzz!, kids register at http://www.Scholastic.com/SummerReading, and then log in titles each time they finish reading a book. For every four books read, Scholastic will donate one book to Reading is Fundamental (RIF), up to 50,000 books. Non-profit RIF will distribute Scholastic’s donated books to underprivileged kids. At the same time, teachers in 250,000 classrooms will get Reading Buzz materials, including book logs that kids take home to keep track of their reading offline. (Books tallied in those logs trigger donations to RIF, too). The classroom kits also include age-appropriate books, reading activities, and a $1 coupon for children’s books at Target.
