Google Tops U.K. List in January

A recent report released by comScore World Metrix showed that Google Sites attracted the largest audience of unique visitors in the U.K. during the month of January. The search giant beat out Microsoft Sites for the top spot, while Moneysupermarket.com, a price comparison site, jumped up 40 spots from December to finish 20th in January.

Google Sites drew 29.6 million unique visitors in January, while Microsoft Sites drew 28.1 million visitors. EBay was third with 21.4 million unique visitors, Yahoo! Sites were fourth with 21.2 million visitors, and BBC Sites were fifth with 19.2 million unique visitors.

Amazon Sites (14.6 million), Ask Network (14.5 million), Wikipedia Sites (14.0 million), Facebook.com (12.8 million), and Lycos Europe Sites (11.9 million) rounded out the top 10 on the list.

AOL LLC made its U.K. debut with a 12th place finish (11.4 million visitors), while Moneysupermarket.com finished 20th (6.6 million), a huge increase from December’s 60th place finish.

There were a total of 33.3 million unique U.K. visitors in January.

Car Rental sites saw the biggest month-to-month growth as a category. It attracted 837,000 unique visitors in December and 1.5 million unique visitors in January, reflecting a growth of 80%. Career Resources and Job Search sites each grew 67%, while Hotels/Resorts grew 54%. Airlines (46%), Online Travel Agents (43%), Taxes (42%), Training and Education (40%), Real Estate (40%), and Career Services and Development (36%) rounded out the top 10 list of the top gaining site categories in January.
