Google Leads Global Search Market, Europe Searches Most

According to a report released earlier this week by comScore, Google topped the worldwide search market in July, handling 76.7 billion searches during the month.

Google’s share of searches translated to a 67.5 percent global search market share and marked a 41 percent increase from the 48.7 billion searches it handled in July 2008.

Yahoo! was second with 8.9 billion searches in July, a 7.8 percent share of the worldwide search market. This marked a 2 percent increase from the 8.7 billion searches it handled in the same month last year.

Baidu.com, the leading search engine in China, ranked third with 8.0 billion searches in July, or 7.0 percent of the market. This was an 8 percent increase from the 7.4 billion queries it handled in July 2008.

Microsoft was fourth with 3.3 billion searches in July, or 2.9 percent of the global market. This marked a 41 percent increase from the 2.3 billion searches it handled in the same month in the previous year.

EBay was fifth with 1.7 billion searches, or 1.5 percent of the worldwide market, which marked a 41 percent increase from the 1.2 billion searches it handled in the same month last year.

NHN Corporation, a South Korean portal, handled 1.5 billion searches in July, or 1.3 percent of the global market, which marked a 23 percent increase from the 1.2 billion searches it handled last year.

Ask Network handled 1.3 billion searches in July, giving it a 1.1 percent global market share.

Yandex, the leading Russian search engine, handled 1.3 billion searches in July, growing 94 percent from the 663 million searches it handled last year, making it the fasted growing search property on the top 10 list.

AOL LLC handled 1.0 billion searches, reflecting a year-over-year decline of 11 percent, the only top-10 search property to see its number of queries handled decrease from last year.

Facebook rounded out the top 10 list with 879 million searches in July, an 18 percent increase from the 743 million it handled in July 2008.

Of the five global regions mentioned in comScore’s report, Europe was the one with the most searches. The continent accounted for 36.4 billion searches in July, or 32.1 percent of the worldwide total.

Asia Pacific was second with 35.0 billion searches in July, or 30.8 percent of the total during the month.

North America was third with 25.1 billion searches during the month, or 22.1 percent of the worldwide total.

Latin America was fourth with 10.5 billion queries in July, or 9.3 percent of the total. This region’s users were the most frequent searchers, with a 130.4 searches-per-searcher figure and a 13.0 search-usage-days-per-searcher figure.

Middle East-Africa was fifth with 6.6 billion searches, or 5.8 percent of the market.

A total of 113.7 billion searches were conducted around the globe in July, according to comScore.
