Google Chrome Was More Popular Back Then

Now that much of the dust has settled, it seems that Google Chrome’s initial charm has worn off a bit.

Nielsen Online recently indicated that during its first week of unveiling, Google’s new Chrome Web browser attracted 1.9 million U.S. users to the Chrome “Thank You” page, which usually indicates a download, according to the global media company.

Males made up 73% of this audience, while 34% of the total audience was composed of males falling into the 35-49 age range. Females made up the remaining 27%, while 14% of the total audience composed of females falling into the 18-34 age range.

Nielsen also tracked the online buzz on blogs, message boards, forums, and Usenet Newsgroups. It found that the buzz about Google Chrome peaked on September 3rd, the day after the browser was made available to the public. On this day, Chrome generated 0.92% of online consumer discussion, compared to Firefox’s 0.4%, Internet Explorer’s 0.2%, Safari’s 0.09%, and Opera’s 0.07%.

As of Monday evening (10:00 p.m. EDT), Net Applications showed that Chrome had a 0.71% of the browser market, down from its peak share of 1.1% on September 20th at 5:00 a.m. EDT.

Of course, the final verdict on Chrome must be withheld until it at least exits its beta stage. But with Gmail still in beta, who knows when that will happen.

There are already reports that Chrome will eventually support add-ons.
