Former Blockbuster Marketing Executive Joins Applebee’s As CMO

Applebee’s has named former Blockbuster marketing executive George Williams as the company’s new chief marketing officer. The post took effect Feb. 9.

In his new role, Williams oversees marketing and advertising initiative for the $4.7 billon brand. In addition, he is responsible for the company’s food and menu strategy, as well as research and development. He reports to Dave Goebel, chief executive officer.

Williams replaces John Cywinski who left the company last May to spend more time with his family (PROMO Xtra, May 23, 2006).

Prior to joining Applebee’s , Williams worked as a private marketing consultant. He previously worked for four years as senior vice president of marketing for Blockbuster, where he led marketing efforts for the $4 billion brand.

Williams also also held marketing posts at Pearle Vision Center and Long John Silver’s Holdings. Inc, and for Days Inn.

The Overland, KN-based company operates 1,936 Applebee’s restaurants in 49 states and 17 countries.
