Federated Direct Gets a New Chief

Federated Department Stores has named James J. Amann, a 38-year company veteran, as executive vice president of strategic initiatives. He will also head Federated Direct, the firm’s direct marketing arm.

Amann was chairman of Federated’s financial, Administrative and Credit Services (FACS) unit. He will continue to be responsible for financial services.

Tom Cole, chairman of Federated Logistics & Operations, will head FACS. Amy Hanson, president of FACS, will be responsible for all of the unit’s operations.

As vice president of strategic initiatives, Amann will be responsible for merchandise systems development, privacy, customer loyalty and service programs, technology investments and direct-to-customer business options. He will report to CEO James J. Zimmerman.

Earlier this year, Federated closed and sold the assets of its Fingerhut subsidiary. Federated Direct now consists only of one direct mail catalog, Bloomingdale’s by Mail, and two Web sites–www.macys.com and www.bloomingdales.com (DIRECT, April 2002).
