Facebook’s Top Languages, Apps, Pages, Connect Sites

Yes, Facebook is getting a new black eye every day thanks to some kind of privacy blunder, but it hasn’t changed the fact that it’s still the most dominant social networking site – and maybe even website, period – in all the land. So, here’s a step back and a brief overview of what parts of the non-privacy-related Facebook landscape looks like

Earlier this week, Inside Facebook unveiled the top 10 languages being used on Facebook. English led the way with 213.2 million speakers, or 52.2 percent of the total, based on language settings. Spanish was second with 61.2 million speakers, or around 15.0 percent of the total, followed by French with 23.5 million (5.7 percent), Turkish with 21.9 million (5.4 percent) and Indonesian with 20.5 million (5.0 percent).

Italian was sixth with 16.2 million speakers (4.0 percent), while German has 11.3 million speakers (2.8 percent), Chinese has 9.6 million (2.4 percent), Portuguese has 6.1 million (1.5 percent) and Arabic has 3.5 million (0.8 percent).

“What’s notable about these language stats is not that English is the dominant language of Facebook (that should be obvious), but rather that the next languages in line do not fall neatly in line with Facebook’s list of top countries by overall userbase,” noted Susan Su. “That indicates that users in some of the countries that are contributing significantly to Facebook’s ‘over 400 million’ total usage figure are still using the site in English, despite the fact that Facebook is now fully localized in their languages.”

Shifting over to applications, FarmVille continued to have a stranglehold on the top spot with 48.3 million weekly active users as of Monday, according to All Facebook. Facebook for iPhone was second with 25.6 million users, followed by Static FBML with 23.5 million users, Café World with 14.7 million users and Texas HoldEm Poker with 14.5 million users.

Facebook for BlackBerry smart phones was sixth with 13.7 million users, followed by Mobile with 13.0 million, Mafia Wars with 12.2 million, PetVille with 10.8 million and Pet Society with 9.4 million active users.

Zynga boasts five of the top 10 apps, while Facebook claims three.

Texas Hold’em Poker was the top Facebook page with 17.1 million fans, followed by Michael Jackson with 12.1 million, Mafia Wars with 11.7 million, Facebook with 9.2 million and Barack Obama with 8.4 million, according to All Facebook.

Vin Diesel (7.8 million), Lady Gaga (7.4 million), Family Guy (7.4 million), Starbucks Coffee Company (7.2 million) and House (6.1 million) rounded out the top 10 pages.

We’re Related was the top Facebook Connect site, in terms of monthly active users. Family Tree was second, followed by Facebook Exporter for iPhoto, Dada Music Player, SideReel, JibJab, Eventbrite, Gizmodo, Geni and CNET, according to All Facebook.
