Facebook Updates ‘Nearby’ Feature, Puts Yelp and Foursquare on Notice

Posted on

Facebook mobileFacebook has updated its “Nearby” feature in its iOS and Android mobile apps. As its name suggests, Nearby, which is the product of Josh Williams, product manager of location and events at Facebook, and the Gowalla team the social network acquired in 2011, helps users discover places of interest near their current location that their friends have liked. Users who open up the Nearby tab in the app will be able to see local establishments that their friends have checked into or liked. Categories can be used to narrow down choices. When a user clicks on a location, they’ll see which of their friends have been there, business hours and other information. Users will also be able to rate or recommend places to their friends on Facebook.
