European Internet Audience Grows 8 Percent

According to recent figures released by comScore World Metrix, the Internet audience in Europe grew from 223.9 million visitors in June 2007 to 241.8 million in June 2008, a growth of 8%.

Russia experienced the biggest growth in its online audience as it grew from 13.8 million to 17.5 million, a 27% increase. France also realized big growth as its audience grew from 26.1 million to 31.5 million, a 21% increase.

Spain (15%), Ireland (15%), Switzerland (12%), Denmark (11%), and the U.K. (10%) also experienced double digit growth during the past year.

The Netherlands saw its audience shrink 1%.

However, in terms of Internet penetration, the Netherlands led Europe with an 82% penetration. Its users spent an average of 23.4 hours online during June, and viewed 2,884 pages.

Denmark’s penetration was 77% in June, followed by Sweden with 76%, Norway with 76%, Finland with 69%, Switzerland with 66%, and the U.K. with 65%.

Russia had the lowest penetration with just 14% in June.

Cumulatively, Europe saw a penetration of 39% in June, with its users spending an average of 23.3 hours online, while viewing 2,665 pages.
