Early Holiday Catalog Sales Strong: DMA Survey

October and November sales for U.S. catalog retailers reveals 221% sales growth on catalog Web sites and 22% growth in print catalog sales, compared to the same period in 1998.

The findings, according to a survey conducted by the Direct Marketing Association, were reported by catalog retailers surveyed Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 including Thanksgiving weekend.

The survey found:

* Catalogers reported average Web sales growth of 221%. Among respondents, 74% reported an increase in Web sales.

* Respondents reported an average of 22% sales growth from print catalogs, 69% reported sales increases.

* Companies reported average growth of 30% in total sales. Among respondents, 74% reported growth in overall sales.

Total catalog sales are expected to exceed $93 billion this year, while the Internet is projected to generate more than $11 billion in sales, according to a study called Economic Impact: U.S. Direct and Interactive Marketing Today, released earlier this year by the DMA.
