DM CRIME: Malicious Subscriptions

No doubt magazine publishers are wracking their brains for creative new ways to boost circulation in the wake of the sweepstakes disaster. But even so, Penny Page’s method would be too much of a good thing.

After being angered by a landlord, a neighbor and a job counselor, the 46-year-old Ohioan signed her enemies up for a total of 350 magazine subscriptions.

None of the newly subscribed, or the judge, found this funny.

After first pleading not guilty – saying she was a full-time college student and had no time for such shenanigans – Page pleaded guilty in September to four counts of forgery. Lake County Common Pleas Judge Paul Mitrovich wrote her a subscription for two months in jail, three years’ probation and a seat in a weekly anger-management class.

A recent wire report quoted the judge as saying, “I don’t think you realize the gravity of the situation. These people would like to see you put away because you’re a menace to society and to yourself.”

“I’m not a vicious person,” she replied.
