Convenience Store Adopts Heat-Sensitive Loyalty Card

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Convenience-store chain AmeriStop has launched a loyalty program using cards that tailor messages to members each time they visit the store.

AmeriStop’s Promotion Card is a heat-sensitive card that members present at each transaction. The card is inserted in a special P-O-P terminal that posts the points earned with that transaction, and a personalized message tailored to the user’s purchase history.

“The ability for us to really understand and reward our customers as individuals was a big factor in our decision,” said AmeriStop COO Tony Parnigoni in a statement.

The card’s magnetic strip carries a full purchase history for that card, which is updated automatically with each transaction. The card, developed by Overland Park, KS-based Visible Results USA, can carry targeted promotions, ads or instant-win game codes.

AmeriStop program members earn gas discounts when they buy promotional items; a sweeps overlay piques members’ interest. The cards are valid in AmeriStop Markets and AmeriStop Express gas stations in Ohio and Kentucky.

Airline Origin Pacific, based in Visible Results’ home country of New Zealand, uses the heat-sensitive cards for its frequent-flier program. Members see their updated tally on their Origin Flyer card each time they fly.
