Condiments Knock Ready-to-Eat Cereal off No. 1 Coupon Spot

As the BBQ season gets underway consumers are stocking up on condiments and using coupons to get some bargains.

Condiments jumped to the No. 1 spot on the list of the most popular online coupons categories printed in May, according to Coupons.com, a network for digital coupons.

And other items used for summer festivities moved up to the Top 10 list: Cheese ranked No. 4, salad dressing (No. 5), powdered beverage mix (No. 7) and cooking sauces (No. 10).

“It’s no surprise that so many barbeque-related coupon categories advanced into the Top 10 last month,”said Steven Boal, CEO of Coupons, Inc. “Consumers stocked up on all their cook-out necessities, while taking advantage of in-store holiday sales and deep discount offers to keep costs down.”

Also landing in the Top 10 were crackers (No. 2), salty Snacks (No. 6) and dessert items (No. 9). Ready-to-eat cereal fell from its long-time top position to No. 3, while pizza moved up a notch to No. 8.

The ranking is based on the number of coupon prints by category on Coupons.com and sites across the Coupons.com publisher network.

As a signal that consumers are stepping up their search for coupons, shoppers printed more coupon savings from the Coupons.com publisher network in May 2009 than any other month in the company’s history, the firm said.

More than 40 million people currently print online coupons, up 20% from last year according to Simmons Market Research Bureau. In the same time period, the number of people that only print coupons from the Internet and never use newspaper coupons has risen a dramatic 46%to 6 million Americans.
