While the world’s best athletes will converge upon Athens this summer in search of Olympic glory, feline fanatics from across the United States will be competing to be America’s Top Cat Lover.
And instead of trying to run the fastest, jump the farthest or lift the most weight, the winners will be the ones who excel in events like “Hairball Toss” and “Litterbox Cleanup.”
The eight-city Meow Mix Gold Medal Games will be based around the theme of “keeping cats happy.” Contestants will test their skills in games that simulate activities they would normally do for their cats, such as feeding them, removing hairballs, cleaning out a litterbox and playing with a ball of yarn.
At each stop on the tour, Meow Mix will partner with a local animal shelter or foster group, and donate one pound of Meow Mix cat food to that organization for each person who participates. In addition, Meow Mix is using the Gold Medal Games as a platform to promote cat adoption, and each local partner will be present at the event with cats looking for permanent homes.
Kerri Strug, who won a gold medal in gymnastics at the 1996 Olympics, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event in New York City on June 22. The tour starts in Boston June 11 and ends July 31 in Portland, OR.
At the conclusion of the tour, one of the gold medal winners will be randomly selected to receive a one-of-a-kind citrine, diamond and gold cat collar, as well as a custom pendant, both created specially for The Meow Mix Company by Szul.com and valued at $5,000.
