Android Leads Smartphone Platforms in Market Share, iOS Leads in Mobile Web Traffic

While Google’s Android mobile OS might continue to grow its market-leading share of the smartphone platform market, Apple’s iOS holds a mighty lead when it comes to mobile Web traffic.

According to comScore’s latest report on the U.S. mobile market, Samsung remains the top mobile original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the U.S. with a three-month average 25.3 percent of the market in September, unchanged from its share in June.

LG followed with 20.6 percent of the market for the three-month average period ending in September, down 0.7 percentage points from its 21.3 percent share in June. Motorola was third with 13.8 percent in September, down 0.7 points from its 14.5 percent share in June.

Apple was fourth with 10.2 percent of the market in September, up 1.3 points from its 8.9 percent share in June. RIM rounded out the list of top mobile OEMs with 7.1 percent of the market, down 0.8 percentage points from its 7.9 percent share in June.

comScore noted that 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices during the three-month average period ending in September. In this same period, 87.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones, up 12 percent from the preceding three-month period.

Google led all smartphone platforms with 44.8 percent of the market in September, up 4.6 percentage points from its 40.2 percent share in June. Apple was second with 27.4 percent, up 0.8 points from its 26.6 percent share observed in June.

RIM was third with 18.9 percent of the market, down 4.6 percentage points from its 23.5 percent share in June. Meanwhile, Microsoft was fourth with 5.6 percent, down 0.2 points from its 5.8 percent share in June. Symbian claimed 1.8 percent of the market in September, down 0.2 points from its 2.0 percent share in June.

comScore’s report also noted that 71.1 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile devices during the three-month average period ending in September, up 1.5 percentage points from the mark seen in June.

Meanwhile, 42.9 percent used browsers on their mobile devices, up 2.8 percentage points; 42.5 percent downloaded apps, up 3.0 points; 31.5 percent accessed social networking sites or blogs, up 2.4 points; 28.8 percent played games, up 1.9 points; and 20.9 percent listened to music on their mobile devices, up 1.9 points.

Separate numbers from Net Market Share show that in October, iOS claimed 61.5 percent of mobile Web traffic, followed by Android with 18.9 percent and Java ME with 12.8 percent.
