Albertsons Taps Gannon as CMO

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Albertsons has promoted Paul Gannon to chief marketing officer for its 2,500-store supermarket and drugstore business. Gannon had been president-CEO of Shaw’s Supermarkets, which Albertsons bought in April.

Gannon will oversee all marketing for Albertsons’ food and drug chains including Jewel-Osco, Acme, Sav-on Drugs and Super Saver. He’ll supervise consumer research, price/promotion/assortment strategy, brand management, advertising, format development and e-business.

Gannon had been with New England grocer Shaw’s for 14 years, where he “helped the team at Shaw’s grow market share, integrate key acquisitions, and become a leader in loyalty, brand and neighborhood marketing,” per a statement from Albertsons CEO Larry Johnston. Boise, ID-based Albertsons bought the 206-store chain for $2.5 billion, which helped boost Albertsons’ sales to $10.2 billion (up 13%) for the second fiscal quarter ended July 29. Not including Shaw’s, same-store sales fell 1.5%.
