Acxiom Hacker Pleads Guilty

Daniel J. Baas, who broke into an Acxiom Corp. File Transfer Protocol server during the July 27 weekend, has entered a guilty plea in U.S. District Court, according to a published report.

Baas was ordered held without bail pending his sentencing, which should be within two months, according to reports. While the crime carries a maximum five-year sentence, Baas is expected to receive a lighter punishment in light of his cooperation with authorities.

The breach compromised one external File Transfer Protocol server, which was not behind the Acxiom firewall, according to an Acxiom statement released at the time.

Baas had been a network administrator who also coordinated web applications at Market Intelligence Group, Cincinnati, OH. Baas was fired from MIG in June after three years on the job, Robert Migliara, MIG’s president said in August.

According to Migliara, at that time Ohio law enforcement officials alleged that Baas had been misusing company equipment. Migliara didn’t provide further details.

Acxiom is a vendor to MIG, Migliara said.

Migliara did not believe that Baas, who was 24 when arrested, intended to do anything fraudulent with the data he is accused of capturing.
