The Talbots Inc., Hingham, MA, had first quarter net sales of $401.1 million, up 10% from $363.5 million recorded in first quarter 2000. Net income rose 23%, from $32.7 million to $40.1 million. The quarter ended May 5.
Catalog sales amounted to $78 million, up 15% from $68.1 million a year ago. Retail store sales made up $323.1 million of that, up from $295.4 million, partly due to an increased number of outlets. Same store sales were up 2.4% between quarters.
