Omaha Steaks Inc., a direct marketer of meat and other food-related products, had a complaint filed against it with the Federal Trade Commission Thursday, according to published reports.
The complaint, authored by consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen, alleges that the Omaha, NE-based company’s customers were not informed that its ground beef had been treated to radiation to prevent spoilage and bacteria growth. The complaint did not mention the company’s steaks or other products.
According to reports, Omaha Steaks has denied the allegations. The company maintains that it announced in November that it would begin irradiating its ground beef, and that Public Citizen’s contentions are without merit.
