Federated Posts $52 Million Loss

Federated Department Stores Inc. reported a net loss of $52 million for the first quarter, compared to a net income of $123 million last year.

Management of the Cincinnati-based company attributed these results largely to cost associated with its acquisition of the May Co. last August.

The cataloger and retailer reported sales of $5.9 billion for the quarter ended April 29, up 62.9% over $3.6 billion last year.
