Andrew Svenson, Veteran DMer, Dies

Andrew Svenson, a veteran direct marketer, died Tuesday in Montgomery, AL after a long illness. He was 66.

He began his more than 40-year career in direct marketing in 1961 when he became mail order manager for Doubleday & Co. in New York. Over the years, Svenson held senior marketing positions with Cornell University Press, Weekly Reader Children's Book Club, Meredith Corp.and Fuller & Dees Marketing Group.

In 1978, he launched a consulting business - Andrew Svenson Co. Inc. in Sarasota, FL, working for dozens of major book and magazine publishers in North America and Europe.

He also owned Things of Science - a monthly membership club offering scientific experiment kits to 10 to 16-year-old science enthusiasts.

Most recently, Svenson was development director for the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, AL.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Jeannine Svenson; seven children from two, previous marriages, seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, at 2:00P.M. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1728 South Hull St., Montgomery, AL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church.
