The person arrested for allegedly breaking into an Acxiom File Transfer Protocol server has been identified as Daniel J. Baas in a Hamilton County Sheriff’s office arrest report. Baas is due to face a grand jury on Aug. 18, according to published reports.
Baas had been a network administrator who also coordinated web applications at Market Intelligence Group, Cincinnati, OH. Baas was fired from MIG in June after three years on the job, according to Robert Migliara, MIG’s president.
According to Migliara, at that time Ohio law enforcement officials alleged that Baas had been misusing company equipment. Migliara didn’t provide further details.
Acxiom is a vendor to MIG, Migliara said.
When Baas’s alleged misdeeds with Acxiom’s FTP server came to light, he was already in custody, according to published reports. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s office did not offer comment on the case.
Acxiom was notified of the breach last weekend by Ohio law enforcement officials. The intrusion itself took place on Dec. 10, according to the arrest report, which noted that it had recovered evidence of the break-in.
Migliara did not believe that Baas, 24, intended to do anything fraudulent with the data he is accused of capturing.
"I don’t believe there was any malicious intent. You bring on smart people and train them, and sometimes people do stupid things," he said.
Investigations in both cases are ongoing. Baas was due to be arraigned Monday, Migliara said.
