Ireland has passed an anti-spam law under which companies sending unsolicited commercial e-mail and text messages to people in the country could face hefty fines

Signed last week by Ireland’s communications minister, Eamon Ryan, the legislation went into effect immediately.

Violators reportedly face fines of up to 250,000 euros—about $349,000 at current exchange rates.
