The same Sophos’ Security Threat Management Report cited above also claims that Boca Raton, FL is no longer the center of the spam universe.
“Efforts, such as [Internet service providers] sharing knowledge on how to crack down on spammers and authorities enforcing the Can-Spam legislation, have helped North America tackle the spammers based on their doorsteps,” said the report. “It is becoming apparent that Boca Raton, FL, can no longer be considered the spam capital of the world and that Russia is now the natural home to many of the spammers.”
It has been estimated that 90% of the world’s spam comes from about 150 people, 40 of whom are in Boca Raton. Some experts claimed that spam activity overall dropped for a short period last year as a result of hurricanes disrupting some spammers’ operations in Florida.
Why has Boca Raton been so attractive to spammers? Reasons reportedly include Florida’s lenient bankruptcy laws, the warm weather and laid-back lifestyle, proximity to Internet data centers, and a history of telemarketing and e-mail marketing.
Wonder what it is about Russia?
