Canada Post has begun offering social networking marketing services for direct marketers who want to establish e-commerce stores at Secondlife.com, as well as list-related services.
It has opened a “virtual marketing agency” to provide creative and database services for direct mail, e-mail and shopping in online stores.
Services being offered by Canada Post include Web traffic counters and scripts for pop up boxes to encourage consumers to register online.
Various templates can be downloaded to do everything from creating online stores to purchasing lists and building customer databases, according to Stephanie Bullock, director of segment management for direct marketing at Canada Post. Other templates can be used for staging virtual events online to generate Web traffic.
Canada Post will be hosting online roundtable discussions and Webcasts for marketers to share ideas.
For consumers the lure is being able to create three-dimensional “avatar” characters with profiles that represent themselves—able to “virtually” walk around and shop online—making the experience like a computer game.
“We have experience in direct marketing and we’re exploring social networking. We know our small business customers are using social networking and we’re trying to adapt and provide education for direct marketing,” says Bullock.
