IT WAS almost anticlimactic after the buildup, but on Sept. 24 the U.S. Postal Service filed its long-awaited postal rate case, asking for an 8.7% hike.

Direct mailers face a 7.3% increase in the Standard Mail (advertising) rate. The price of a first class stamp would rise by 8.2% to 37 cents.

Leaders Wanted Delay

Although less than the 15% hike projected earlier this year, the rate case filing infuriated trade association leaders who wanted a delay.
