Will Slim-Fast Replace Whoopi?

Slim-Fast Foods Co. has no plans to hire another celebrity spokesperson after dropping actress Whoopi Goldberg from ads last week.

Slim-Fast said it would pull TV and print ads featuring Goldberg following her comments on President George Bush at a fundraiser for John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate.

“We at Slim-Fast trust the public understands that the way in which Whoopi Goldberg chose to express her own personal beliefs … does not reflect the views and values of Slim-Fast,” said Terry Olson, Slim-Fast general manager and VP-marketing, in a statement. “Slim-Fast selected Whoopi Goldberg as its spokesperson because of her commitment to losing weight, which we applaud.”

A source close to the brand said Slim-Fast had considered a rotation of celebrities for the flagging brand, but Slim-Fast is not considering that now, a spokeswoman said. Future ad plans are still being finalized.

Unilever-owned Slim-Fast tapped Goldberg in December for a TV and print campaign themed “Lose Big” that broke Jan. 1 via Grey Global Group, New York City. The ads were slated to stop running in August. Goldberg did not make additional appearances in consumer promotions.
