Truste Proposes Symbol-Based Privacy Standards: Reports

Aiming to increase consumer comfort with privacy standards, Online customer protection organization Truste is proposing a series of symbols and labels that will clarify and standardize Web site privacy policies.

According to Truste, its Privacy Symbols and Labels Initiative will allow consumers to quickly realize what practices a given site follows, rather than requiring them to wade through densely written privacy statements.

The initiative is based on the online industry’s Platform for Privacy Preferences, which allows consumers to dictate their level of privacy protection, and set automatic controls within their browser that alert them to differences between their personal standards and the site policies.
