Office supply chain Staples is looking for a few good photos that it can turn into posters.
Staples launched a photo contest yesterday, inviting amateur photographers to submit pictures that show off their hometowns.
Staples will pick 40 finalists, and then print posters from those photos to sell in each finalist’s hometown and surrounding region. The finalists get royalties from their own poster’s sale as part of their prize. (They also get a $100 Staples gift card.)
One grand-prize winner gets a trip to Iceland. All entrants get a coupon to print a color poster for free.
The Hometown Views contest runs through March 15. Entrants submit their photos and 15-word captions online at staples.com/HometownViews. Judges from Staples will choose five finalists in eight geographic regions (40 in all): New England, Mid-Atlantic, Capital, Southeast, Southwest, West, Midwest and Northwest. Reps from the Professional Photographers of America will help choose the top winner. Finalists and the grand-prize winner will be announced in May.
Staples will sell posters of the finalists’ photos from July 1 through Sept. 15, in each photographer’s geographic region. The grand-prize winning photo likely will be sold nationally in Staples’ 1,300 stores. Finalists get $1 for each of their posters sold, up to $5,000 each.
Don Jagoda Associates, Melville, NY, executes the contest for Framingham, MA-based Staples.
The contest promotes Staples’ Copy & Print Centers. It is designed to let consumers sample Staples’ photo-printing services of in two ways: The posters of hometown haunts play to local loyalty, and the coupons for a free poster let shutterbugs try out the service with their own photos.
“With our Copy & Print Centers’ latest printing capabilities, we are helping our customers celebrate why everyone loves their hometowns with beautiful posters of where they live and work,” said Rob Schlacter, Staples vice president of business services, in a statement.
