Sprint Nextel Corp. has named Tim Kelly as its new chief marketing officer. He replaces Mark Schweitzer who will leave the post at the end of the month.
In his new role, Kelly, who currently heads Sprint’s customer management division, will oversee the company’s national marketing strategy, pricing and market research.
“Sprint Nextel continues to focus on reinvigorating our branding in the mobility marketplace, and with his vast marketing experience in the industry Tim is the right person to continue our positive momentum,” said Gary Foresee, Sprint Nextel chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement.
Kelly joined Sprint in 1994 and worked in various branding, marketing and advertising positions before leading the customer management division. Prior to that, he worked as senior vice president for Partners and Shevack.
One of Kelly’s first initiatives will be to oversee Sprint’s new advertising campaign, designed to attract and retain customers. Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, the company’s new agency of record will handle initiative, which will debut by the end of the quarter.
Sprint replaced its former ad agencies, Hal Riney & Partners and TBWA\ Chiat\Day, last month.
Schweitzer has worked for Sprint Nextel for over 10 years. He was named chief marketing officer after the merger of Sprint and Nextel in August 2005. Previously, he worked as senior vice president of marketing for Nextel Communications Inc. Prior to that, he was vice president marketing for Nextel.
Steve Nielsen, Sprint’s senior vice president of finance operations, will lead the customer management department as chief service officer.
