As part of a companywide consolidation effort, Spiegel Inc. will close a Rapid City, SD customer contact center that employs 240 and a Newport News, VA distribution center employing about 400 in December.
Beginning in January, the Downers Grove, IL-based company will process orders for all its divisions – Eddie Bauer, Newport News and the Spiegel Catalog — through Distribution Fulfillment Services, a subsidiary based in Groveport, OH.
The company also plans to move its DFS retail distribution operation from Columbus, OH to the Groveport facility. Approximately 40 employees in support positions will be let go as part of the consolidation; most are expected to transfer to Groveport.
Spiegel’s other existing customer contact centers located in Hampton, VA; Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; and Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, will remain open to handle the company’s teleservices needs.
“These actions are based on the results of an analysis of the capacity and facility costs of the company’s customer contact center network and its warehousing and logistics operations,” said Alexander Birken, senior vice president and chief administrative officer, in a statement.
