SkyMall Inc. shares leaped 30% to $23 after the in-flight catalog company announced Thursday that it had formed an Internet shopping mall unit and appointed an Internet veteran to head it. Skymall.com (http://www.skymall.com) went into operation Jan. 1.
Skymall.com, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company, will operate SkyMall’s existing e-commerce business and focus on rapidly expanding its two key business lines. Those business areas include developing SkyMall’s Web site and pursuing alliances with other marketing companies to sell their products through the site.
Skymall.com appointed Sandy Goldman as vice president of sales to direct the Web presence. Goldman was previously the chief executive officer of pix.com, an Internet photo startup. Before that, he was general manager of WavePhore, Inc.’s WaveTop service, which delivers Internet programming over TV broadcast signals.
