Penney to Raise Earnings Expectations

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. plans to raise its short-term earnings expectations for the quarter that ended Oct. 26, according to published reports. But sales are down in the catalog division.

The company said it expects to earn more than 21 cents per share.

The Plano, Texas retailer said that department store sales exceeded a planned 3% to 4% sales gain in October. And, though Eckerd drug stores sales dipped below company expectations for the month, operating profits beat expectations, said reports.

Sales from the Penney catalog, however, were down 20% in October.
