Thanks to a partnership between the National Basketball Association and Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc., gamers can download highlights of the weekend-long events on to their PlayStation Portable devices in what’s dubbed “NBA All-Star Weekend to Go.”
The deal marks the first time All-Star content will be available for downloading to a mobile device.
“We’ve been working with Sony since 1994 from a gaming point of view but we saw PSPs as a great vehicle to get our legs under and to take advantage of,” said Steve Grimes, senior director of interactive services at the NBA.
Fans can download the video highlights for free at NBA.com/allstar2006.
“The PSP system is the perfect medium for basketball fans to get their NBA action and view it anytime, anywhere, at their convenience,” said Sharon Shapiro, senior director, promotions and sports product marketing at Sony, in a statement.
Also a first is the availability of full-broadcasts of the All-Star game, the NBA All-Saturday Night and the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge competitions at Video.google.com, for a price of $3.95 per game. The content was made available 24 hours after an event.
“We’re always looking at the best way to get content out to fans and this year the big change is that we have to deliver content to fans on their times,” Grimes said. “This [initiative] is very much the tip of the iceberg. We’ll continue to look at devices when they come out to see if they’re something we want to put our content in.”
