Mobile phone maker Motorola and wireless carrier Nextel are offering to give new customers the fuel to travel and the phones they need to call home once they get there.
The pair is aligning on an in-store customer sweepstakes that will give away $2,500 worth of gas to each of five winners who enter the “Motorola Push-to-Talk Sign Up, Speed Up, Gas Up Sweepstakes” at participating Sprint Nextel outlets.
No purchase is required to enter, but it’s hoped the contest will draw in shoppers who will then test-drive Sprint Nextel’s latest addition to its line of Direct Connect “push to talk” (PTT) handsets, the Motorola Renegade V950, added to the Nextel lineup earlier this month.
The new handset, designed to military specification and resistant to dust, shock, vibration and blowing rain, is the fifth device offered by Sprint that combines walkie-talkie-like PTT functions with access to the Sprint Broadband network, and the first from Motorola.
Alongside the consumer sweepstakes, Motorola and Sprint are rolling out a gasoline-powered “Hot Rewards” sales incentive promotion. Authorized Sprint Nextel Direct Connect sales reps will receive cash rewards for every sale of Motorola PTT handsets plus a chance to win one of eight awards of up to 950 gallons of gas.
The Motorola Renegade is available through Sprint for a suggested retail price of $129.99 with a two-year service contract and a $50 mail-in rebate.
Marketing consultant MNA Creative conceived and produced the promotion, including P-O-P media and dealer collateral.
“Free gas is a hot incentive right now,” MNA account service vice president Philip Congello Jr. said in a statement. “The combination of a timely consumer promotion with an attractive dealer incentive is a one-two punch that will drive Motorola push-to-talk sales.”
