Microsoft Weighs In On Privacy

Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, will test an upgrade to its Internet Explorer software that would alert users when they encounter a cookie from third-party ad servers.

Bob Herbold, chief operating officer for Microsoft, said in a statement that the upgrade is to help “make intelligent security decisions” by letting them know when a cookie is being uploading onto their computers.

While such privacy groups as Junkbusters gave Microsoft qualified praise, the Network Advertising Initiative, among others, condemned the new software, claiming it would “undermine the Internet business model that allows Web sites to stay free.”
